Dipstick mishap!

This happened when our R44 was at another operation before we left there to start Colorado Heli-Ops!! The solo pilot, very low time with only 11 hours in this type, checked the oil and forgot to put the dipstick back in. He was VERY fortunate that Nathan found the dipstick on the ground and called the ship back!!! Can you imagine being over down town Denver and have an engine failure with only 11 hours in type!! This is just one of the MANY reasons that Heli-Ops exists today!

This was after it sat on the ramp for a while!!

When this ship landed, after being called back by the tower (thank God the pilot was monitoring the correct freq), it had less than three quarts of oil.. it had flown for around 30 minutes.. had it not been called back at that moment and made it home safely it would have had to have a new engine!!

The CFI was supposed to have dispatched the pilot and made sure stuff like this didn't happen, especially on the first flight after PIC sign off... not sure what happened there??

It was surprising how oil went almost everywhere. It cost around $1000 to clean this up and get her back into flying condition. She smelled like oil for a month after that. If you leave the dipstick out of a Schweizer 300 the oil will not fly out, but in a Robbie it is a little more serious!

Oil even made it all the way up here!
